Participate, learn from, and help other caregivers in a free 6-week online workshop

Being a part of the ‘caregivers [workshop]’ has given me an assurance that I am not alone with caring for my husband. It was good that I could join in on this discussion at any time day or night and that I did not have to drive anywhere. It is also easier to open up by being anonymous. Thank you to all for their guidance, support, and great suggestions.

Workshop participant

Are you caring for someone with memory loss who lives in a rural area?  If so, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) invites you to take part in a free 6-week online workshop and study for caregivers.

We ensure fair and equal treatment and participation in this study. We are inclusive of all social groups to which people may belong by race, color, income, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability status, national origin, former involvement with the justice system, or any other social category.

In the workshop you will…

• Log on whenever you want (day or night).

• To get the most out of the workshop log on 2 or more times per week, for 10 to 30 minutes each time

• There is no Zoom/video that is required to participate

You will learn new skills to…

• Help you reduce your stress

• Manage difficult behaviors of your friend or family member

• Take better care of yourself

• Plan for the future

You will get…

• Ideas and support from other caregivers and trained staff

• Information on community resources

• A free workbook to keep

There is no cost to you for participating.

Ready to check if you are eligible?

You are probably eligible if you**:

• Live in a rural area of the United States

• Give care at least 10 hours a week for a family member or friend with memory problems (by care we mean giving help with dressing, meals, transportation, medications, appointments, or similar support).

• Are 18 years of age or older

• Have internet access

** We may need to speak to you by telephone to confirm your eligibility. Only one caregiver per household can join the study.

Will I definitely get in a workshop?

If you are determined to be eligible for the study then, yes, you will get into a workshop, but some of you will have to wait.

If you have to wait, you will get other things while you wait. You will get 2 support calls from study staff and a free handbook with caregiver tips and resources.

Can I choose when I start a workshop?

Unfortunately, no, because this is a study.  A computer program will determine whether you start the workshop right away or have to wait.

If you have to wait, you will get other things while you wait. You will get 2 support calls from study staff and a free handbook with caregiver tips and resources.

What do I need to do to join the study and get a workshop?

If you join the study you will…

• Complete an online eligibility survey to determine if you are eligible.

• Complete a study consent and first study survey that will officially enroll into the study. It will take about 20-40 minutes.

• Be assigned to a workshop. A computer program will determine whether you start the workshop right away or have to wait.

• Complete 3 more study surveys. These will take place 6 weeks, 6 months and 12 months from the time you join the study, and will take about 20-30 minutes each.

• All caregivers will receive up to $80 in cash for completing the 4 study surveys ($20 per completed survey).

Why do I need to do so many surveys?

Because this is a study, we need the surveys to help us evaluate the workshop. Depending on the results of the study, the workshop may become available to more caregivers of people with memory loss.
